Helping Children with Autism

The Helping Children with Autism (HCWA) package is an Australian Government initiative providing support for children aged 0 – 6 years with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), their families and carers.

Funding of up to $12,000 is available to children aged 0-6 years diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Children must be Australian citizens or Permanent Residents of Australia, and families must apply for the funding before their child’s sixth birthday. Families then have until the child turns 7 to access the funding.

The initiative includes the following components:
  • Funding for early intervention services and treatments for eligible children under the age of six years
  • Medicare items for the development of a treatment and management plan for eligible children under the age of 13
  • Medicare items for up to 4 allied health diagnostic services and for 20 relevant allied health services (in total) for eligible children up to the age of 15 (provided the treatment and management plan is in place before the age of 13).

Better Start for Children with a Disability Initiative

The Better Start for Children with a Disability Initiative is to provide children 0-6 years with developmental disabilities to access funding for up to $12,000 for early intervention services.

Eligible children diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Fragile X Syndrome, or a moderate or greater vision or hearing impairment, including deafblindness, will have access to funding and new Medicare items under the Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative.

Children with an eligible diagnosis must be registered for Better Start before they turn 6. A child will have until they turn 7 to access funding.

The Initiative includes the following components:
  • Funding for early intervention services and treatments for eligible children under the age of 6
  • Medicare items for the development of a treatment and management plan for eligible children under the age of 13
  • Medicare items for up to four allied health diagnostic services and for 20 relevant allied health services (in total) for eligible children up to the age of 15 (provided the treatment and management plan is in place before the age of 13).

Medicare Rebates

The Therapy Place is registered with Medicare for Allied Health Benefits.

Enhanced Primary Care
Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) clients are eligible for 5 Allied Health sessions per year and receive a rebate of $52.95 per session. This is organised through your General Practitioner and requires a Team Care Arrangement to be established.

Better Access for Mental Health Care Initiative
Through this service clients with mental health disorders are eligible for 10 sessions per year. This can include treatment for anxiety and depression. Access to this service is organised though your General Practitioner or Paediatrician. The rebate is $74.80 per session.

Private Health Rebates

The Therapy Place is registered for rebates with most Private Health Insurers.
